Last Update of 2010
Hello folks!
Raising two kids is not an easy task (especially when one of them is a newborn), that's why I haven't been able to update the blog recently.
Anyway, here goes one last update before 2010 is gone.
As you might have noticed, I've been practicing some footwear design lately.
I started attending another graduate program, this time in footwear design.
This is one of the assignments I developed for Design class. Quick, done in a full day's work.
I'll still keep posting some figure sketches, conceptual stuff and some illustrations, don't worry about it.
Thanks for stopping by and a Happy New Year to you!

Homage to Bouguereau
Hello everyone.
I had some time to spare between classes this evening, and decided to try some colored pencils I got as a gift (one of those 12 pencil kits).
Trying to copy the mastery of Adolphe-William Bouguereau is a hard enough challenge by itself, let alone with a limited palette.
About seven colored pencils were used in this sketch.

Oh, please. Not Another Step-by-step!!!
Howdy partners!
Things are pretty busy around here, it's really hard to find some time to update the blog. I'd like to take this time to thank you for your patience.
Going back to the basics. It's a digital painting from a photograph (a printed photograph, not a digital file, which made it a bit harder to paint).
Started with the big shapes, trying to capture the colors.
Then on to the drawing.
Then fixing the painting according to the drawing.
And finally, introducing some texture, adjusting the colors and making the background a bit more interesting.
90% done with Painter, 10% Photoshop.

Lunch Break
It was early, I was bored, and I was waiting for my class to start.
There was a magazine lying on the table right next to me, my sketchbook was opened and I thought: "Why not?"
There are some artists who question the value of a drawing or sketch from a magazine photograph.
I say "it's better to draw from a photograph than not to draw at all."
Colored pencil on sketchbook. Sketches from photographs.

Howdy folks! How've you been?
I know I have been promising this comic strip for a while and finally I did it.
The first strip of (hopefully) many to come.
The following uploads for Worth Dying For will be available here.

Some stuff I found inside a Box
Howdy!
I was cleaning up my office and I found some interesting stuff.
These sketches are kinda old but I think they still deserve some exposure time.
They were not meant to be seen, actually. They're just disorganized studies. I turned the page around trying to fit more than one sketch in. So please, don't mind the composition.
So folks, it's out there! Some old, disorganized stuff.
Thanks for stopping by.

The Dardos Award
I'm glad to announce that Sarah de Godoy, of KAIROS, has awarded a Premio Dardos (Dardos Award) to this Illustration blog.
"The Dardos Award is given for recognition of cultural, literary, and personal values transmitted in the form of creative and original writing. These stamps were created with the intention of promoting fraternization between bloggers, a way of showing affection and gratitude for work that adds value to the web."
What I had to do after taking a little time to feel good about myself was: to pass the award to another 15 blogs that (in my modest opinion) are "worthy of this acknowledgement".
Based on the definition of the award, after a lot of pondering, I chose the following blogs:
- KAIROS (right back at ya, Sarah)
- Avelino
- Lost Mauro
- Crumbim
- Afterthoughts
- Minuta
- All Alone in Watchtower
- Desenhos de Observação
- Edde Wagner
- Brucke Caribe
- Nevarez
- Sketcheria
- Weberson Santiago
- Today's Inspiration
- O Ornitorrinco Canastrão
For those whom I passed along the Award, congrats! And feel free to follow the directions below:
• First, accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person that has granted the award and link to her blog.
• Second pass the award to another 15 blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgment, remembering to contact each of them to let them know they have been selected for this award.
Thanks for stopping by, guys. That'll be all for this post.

Fashion Sketch
Hello folks!
As you all (probably) know, I teach Figure Drawing and Foundation Drawing for Fashion students. I started this sketch this afternoon while my students were busy with their drawing assignments.
I had fun doing it.
The colors were added digitally a few minutes ago.
It turned out nice so I decided to post it.
Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for stopping by.

Male Figure Handout
Hello folks!
This is a quick handout I prepared for my Figure Drawing students.
As you can see there's some room left for text.
I'll be writing some guidelines for drawing the male figure later tonight.
Something about body language, gesture and proportions, I believe you heard that about a thousand times already so I decided to spare you from another lecture.
Thanks for stopping by. I'll try to keep the blog updated regularly.

Long time no See...
Hello everybody!
Life's been terribly hectic.
I've been teaching 30 hours a week and I haven't had time to post anything.
When the week is over, all I want is to spend some time with my wife and kid (and get some sleep).
It's not that I haven't sketched because I have been sketching in class.
The sketches above were done between my last post and this one.
Thanks for your patience. For those following my blog, my deepest apologies.
I'll try harder to keep it updated.
Thanks for stopping by.

Vacation Sketch
Howdy partners!
A page from my sketchbook, drawn this afternoon using black colored pencil and 3B pencil. It's vacation time and I'm on the road so I didn't have time, nor access to a scanner but I felt I needed to post something. The image quality is not that good because it was taken with a small digital camera. The sketches were done from photographs (I wish I had a model but what the heck? - I think it's better to draw from photographs than not to draw at all).
Thanks for stopping by and for the encouragement words and critiques.
See you next update.
