Busy as Heck...
Howdy folks, things have been pretty busy this time of the year. I haven't had time to work on some personal stuff. Things will be back to normal but it will take some time. In the meantime I felt I needed to post something.
I sketched some products, they're very loose, just an exercise to get the rust out of the system.
Thanks for stopping by.

Self-Portrait
Hello folks!
This digital sketch started out as a simple montage - I wanted to make a unique self-portrait/profile picture - and it evolved towards a quick illustration. The montage itself didn't turn out very good, then I thought "Hey, I haven't painted anything for a while..." so I decided to use the crude montage as a reference for this quick digital sketch.
Hope you guys enjoy it. It was fun painting it.
Later folks!

One Sketch a Day Keeps the Doctor Away...
Hello everyone!
This pen sketch was done yesterday as a demonstration to some students. It's from a photograph, not from life. No pencils were used (or harmed) in the process. Plan ahead, be confident and (hopefully) everything will turn out ok.

Animator's Life
Hi folks!
This sketch is from yesterday evening. Part of it was from life, the other part was from, well... my insane mind.

End of Times
Hello folks! How are you guys doing? It's been raining a lot over here. I spent almost 2 hours in traffic today, just one way.
That situation inspired me to produce this sketch. The model posed nude and I decided to fool around, adding some "political message" in the sketch. I'm not very political. I hate politics. Although I believe something's gotta change. Please let it be for the better. After what I've been through in traffic today... I say it's the end of times.
Thanks for listening and for looking.

Number 7
Hello folks!
Number 7 started as a quick doodle at one of my Character Design classes. The students were very busy designing their own characters so I picked up a pencil and started to sketch some nonsense. I liked the way it turned out and decided to finish it digitally.
Hope you guys enjoy him.

Post Apocalyptic Pirelli Calendar
Hello folks, felt like sketching today.
This sketch originated from the "EDs" series. I was thinking about sketching them but something better happened. One of those happy accidents.
I liked this sketch. So much so that I'll be painting it digitally (this time is for real).
Yay for nonsense!!!
Thanks for looking.
Figure Drawing Class
Hello folks, the images shown in this post are from my figure drawing class.
The first one is a 3 minute sketch done with ink wash on Bristol paper.
The second one shows some theory and quick tips I gave to the students in class. Chalk on Chalkboard.
It's kinda hard to draw on chalkboard, it's hard to keep the correct proportions.

Early XMas Sketch and Tv Sketches
Hello folks, how are you doing?
I watched some DVDs this weekend and decided to sketch a little. For those who follow the show - yes, the sketches on the left page are from Comedy Central's "RENO911". I just bought the 5th season. Funny stuff, man. Funny stuff.
On the right side, there's a XMAS sketch (I know it's a bit early for that). Maybe I'll paint it digitally and send out as a XMAS Card.
Thanks for stopping by and for putting up with all the nonsense.

Quick Acrylics study - Kevin's Plush toys
Hello folks, this is a quick study done yesterday night, while watching Tv. I used acrylics and some pastels.
The objects' colors and composition caught my eye, I tried to set aside my will to detail it, focusing my attention on capturing the mood and emphasizing the colors.
It was done fast - impulsive and fun. Hope you enjoy it.
I also posted this sketch at another blog called "Desenhos de Observação". Feel free to check it out, there's a lot of good artists posting their artwork there.

Quick Post - LUTAS
Hello folks, how are you doing?
A friend of mine told me yesterday that a preview for the animation I worked on as a background painter was already online.
I searched a little and here it is.
I painted a few BGs for this animation, it's a Brazilian animation called LUTAS.
Once it's officially released and the studios say it's ok, I'll post some of the BGs I painted.
In the meantime I hope you enjoy it.
The preview also can be found either at Erix Portfolio or Avelino's blog.
You can find the High-Definition video at Youtube.
Let me know your opinions.
I'll post some new stuff in the following days.
Thanks for looking.

My son my Hero
Hello folks, the sketches above were drawn this afternoon.
They're (obviously) from photographs since it's really really hard to get my son to sit still.
When he finally gets to sleep, I'm so exhausted I find myself sleeping as well. It's hard to keep up with him, thankfully he has too much energy.
I'm still trying to find where his "off" switch is. So far no progress. Even a "snooze" button would help.
The one where the "K" is visible on his chest is OK but I think I made him a little older than he actually is.
Anyway, he's the main reason and the inspiration behind my work.
That's why I have to keep working harder and harder.
Thanks for looking.

Idle Sketches
Hello folks!
The sketches above were done today, using Pilot hi-tec pens.
The first one was done during an idle time at the college. It's a view from the teachers' lounge.
The second one was done during a figure drawing exam. The students were drawing and I was sketching. I sketched the second one standing up, without anything close by to lean on. That's why the lines are a little messed up. I also made a mistake while drawing the hand, then I drew a more accurate hand afterwards (still sketchy nonetheless).
It was kinda hard to sketch standing but still fun.
Anyways, I just wanted to update the blog.
Thanks for all your support, comments are always appreciated.

Poster for the Latin-American Meeting of Design 2009
Hello folks how are you doing?
This is an illustration I entered for the 'Latin-American Meeting of Design' Contest, which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in July. I submitted it on Friday, May 29th. The theme is about the Visual Passion of the Latin-American people. I apologize for writing the copyright info on the image uploaded for this post but one can never be too careful. The deadline for the submissions was supposed to be the 29th of May but it was extended.
I used Photoshop on this one, I painted the figures digitally and used some photographs with some layer effects.
Hope you guys like this one, and I also hope it wins.
Just being selected for the exhibition will be a great honor.
Gotta keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for all your support.

Collage Demo
Hello folks, this is a 20 minute collage demonstration I did for my students. One of the classes I teach in college is figure drawing for fashion students. It's a fun class.
I used photocopies, glue (obviously), gesso, brown Pilot hi-tec pen, ink, gouache and green highlighter.
It doesn't look great but I thought it was worth sharing with you guys.
Thanks for stopping by.

Quick Digital Painting
Hi folks, how are you all doing?
This one is a quick digital study, done in Photoshop. I painted it in order to avoid rust from building up.
I know that there's a lot of things that could be improved, such as more detail and color variations in the grass, the cow's shadow should be darker, more details in the background, more value variations in the background, the sense of depth should be improved, one of the horns is too close to the edge, and overall it's a little too green... but I just wanted to finish everything up quickly before my son's nap-time was over. The emphasis was on the cow.
Anyways, it's not great but it's an update.
Thanks for stopping by.

Website sketch
Hello folks!
I finally decided to get a domain name and publish a website.
The first part was easy: registering the domain, deciding the plan, the host etc.
Now comes the hard part... the design.
The website will work as a web portfolio, some clients don't appreciate the Blog format very much.
And I didn't registered the "Laughing Chimp" name by the way.
The website will be directed towards the Brazilian market, so I chose a name that sounds funny and will attract some attention...
It's Fabrica de Metano - or Methane (gas) Factory, in English.
I sketched some characters that could work with the overall idea of the website.
Hope you enjoy this quick update.
I sure did enjoy sketching it.

Easter Sketches
Hello folks, how's everything?
The Easter came and went and thankfully I had some time to get out of the city.
We decided to go to the beach.
I drank a lot of beer, slept a lot, ate a lot of chocolate and even had some time to enjoy the beach and - believe it or not - sketch a little.
Some of the sketches are from life, others from Tv and photographs.
Thanks for stopping by.

Classroom Sketches
Hello folks, Happy Easter!
I was teaching some animal character design stuff this past week. I developed some sketches to show my students the exercise I wanted them to do. You know, exploring shapes, facial expressions, exaggerating scale and proportions, working with "stereotypes" etc. All the fun stuff. Thanks Nick for taking the picture.
I used markers on White Board.
Thank you for stopping by.

Chicken soup for the artist's soul
Hello folks, how have you been?
I've been sick lately, I caught two flu back to back.
The second one really knocked me down. That was a pumped up flu, it came with a side order of sore throat, fever, headaches and nausea. I'm glad it's almost over.
Anyways, in order to keep myself from banging my head against the wall I decided to do some sketching, especially while I was teaching. It helped the healing process.
These are a few of those sketches.
Thanks for stopping by.
